Welcome
Welcome to the Western NC Woodworkers Association Web site! We are a group of area woodworkers who enjoy getting together once each month to share our knowledge of woodworking tools, techniques and project experiences.
Hi Snow Survivors!
After a mere 5” snowstorm on the eve of our February meeting and then a solid 9” accumulation at my home in NW Hendersonville on March 2nd (my wife’s birthday), let’s hope that we won’t still have snow on the ground next Saturday for our next meeting! Enough is enough!
We will meet at Mountain Sawyers in Fletcher at 9:30 AM on March 13 and promise an interesting program that focuses on Cabinetmaking. Dan Campbell and Mitch Trager will present a short session on selecting, sharpening and using Cabinet Scrapers to smooth wood prior to finishing. Rob Payne (that's me) will follow their presentation with a multi-part program on Cabinet Making Basics. I’ll start with some fundamental basics of Cabinetmaking using two key software tools to design a simple raised door cabinet and to layout the wood parts that will be needed – I’ll demonstrate Google’s SketchUp and Bridgewood Design’s Cutlist Plus. Then we’ll move on to the actual parts needed and how to prepare the stock. Finally, I’ll demonstrate some assembly methods using a Kreg pocket hole Jig, a shelf pin jig, dados for accurate alignment and the use of French cleats for hanging. We’ll have handouts and visuals as well as a finished cabinet as part of the presentation.
There are two additional activities we will cover at this meeting. First, Jim Davis will conduct a sale of cabinet making components that have been stored at Mountain Sawyers since last fall. Bring your checkbook to pay for your purchase – there are loads of useful components, sets of cabinet doors and much more. A detailed spreadsheet will be available for everyone attending. Second, we will need to discuss favored topics for the April meeting, where our presenter will be Greg Paolini of Waynesville. Greg is a very accomplished Arts & Crafts furniture designer and fabricator, as well as author (multiple articles appeared in Fine Woodworking this past year) and teacher. I would recommend that everyone look at the classes that Greg is teaching at his shop for ideas (see www.gregorypaolini.com).
Remember that we will serve hot coffee and cookies as usual and that guests are always welcome. We ask that everyone bring a folding chair for seating and wear warm clothes for the large open shop environment. If you haven’t done so already, 2010 dues are due for renewing members. And don’t forget to bring an item for our Show ‘n Tell session – a new tool, a recent project or a book you’d like to report on for others. I’ll also have some freebies for members first, thanks to Ed Fiantaca. A map to Mountain Sawyers is found under Events > Maps.
So let’s think warm and trust that the snow is gone for this year! See everyone there!
Picture below: Our new Logo is depicted on a fantastic inlaid sign made by Tim Merrill on his ShopBot. Dan Campbell created a beautiful Arts and Crafts frame and stand for the sign that we will have at our meetings and events. Thanks guys for a job well Done!
We look forward to seeing you all at our meeting -- In the interim, enjoy making sawdust, but please do it safely!
Rob Payne, President
