Welcome
Welcome to the Western NC Woodworkers Association Web site! We are a group of area woodworkers who enjoy getting together once each month to share our knowledge of woodworking tools, techniques and project experiences.
Happy New Year everyone!
We will meet again at the home of Frank Valenta in Fletcher for our January meeting at 9:30 AM on the 14th. Our speaker will be Paul Patterson, the owner of the Woodcraft stores in Johnson City, TN and Greenville, SC. Revival and use of old hand planes will be the demonstration for our January meeting. Paul will share the techniques that will enable you to convert that old hand plane to a “shop favorite” for you to use. Many of us have our fathers (or grandfathers) old hand plane and actually the older ones are made very well. With some work and proper sharpening you can make these old beauties sing for you. Hand plane use and sharpening as well as what planes to buy and use will be discussed. Paul will be able to answer questions as well.
As a follow-on to Paul’s presentation, we will be showing off the work done in the carving class taught by Mark Strom. We’ll ask each of the participants show off the pieces that they have worked on and any challenges they had in the process. We’ll also have our usual Show ‘N Tell session – be sure to bring that nice new present you found under your tree, or the project you’ve made since then! If you’ve got something that is too big to bring, put some pictures on a USB Memory stick and bring it for us to put into the projector to show everyone.
Please contact me for directions to Frank’s home – be sure that you park cars tightly so we can get everyone into the driveway before parking along the stream side of Dancing Creek Lane. Enter the meeting space (the dance studio) through either door off the lower gravel driveway and be sure you don’t have any grit in your shoes that might damage the hardwood floor! And I’ll toss in a reminder to bring your checkbook if you haven’t paid your 2012 dues. Thanks.
Footnote: Here is a special request from Bob Bernard concerning a Delta Planer: “I picked up a Delta 12" planer, model 22-540, but am missing the knife setting gauge. Delta has discontinued the part, and the new owner of Delta does not have any specifications on the knife projection. If anyone in our association has either the gauge or the information, I would appreciate getting the information so that I can reconstruct a new gauge.”
Thanks,
Bob Bernard

We will serve refreshments and members are encouraged to bring an item for Show ‘N Tell as we try to do each month. We have not announced this meeting to our non-member mailing list, but if you want to bring a guest, that is permissible. Frank has about 30 chairs for seating, but you may bring your favorite folding chair if you prefer.
See you all on the 14th.
Picture below: For those of you that missed our August meeting, we had a great presentation by Bob Thompson on Making Small Boxes. In the picture taken by Michael Havelin shown below, Bob shows us details on hinges in one of his beautiful creations.
We look forward to seeing you all at our meeting -- In the interim, enjoy making sawdust, but please do it safely!
